Ingredients needed to make chocolate cake:
- 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water or hot brewed coffee
Instructions
- Preparation:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
- Mix Dry Ingredients:
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix until well combined.
- Combine Wet Ingredients:
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures:
- Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix; stir until there are no large lumps.
- Add Hot Water or Coffee:
- Carefully pour in the hot water or coffee into the batter and mix until smooth. The batter will be thin but that’s normal.
- Bake:
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Place them in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cooling:
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely before frosting.
- Frosting (Optional):
- You can frost the cake with your favorite chocolate frosting, ganache, or whipped cream.
- Serve:
- Once cooled and frosted, slice and serve the deliciously moist chocolate cake!
